Jadeite is a precious gemstone with significant cultural and historical importance, especially in Asia, Central America, and New Zealand, where it has symbolized protection , peace, and good fortune. Of the two main types of jade-jadeite and nephrite-jadeite is rarer and more valuable. It's color, transparency and texture are key factors in its valuation.

Beyond bangles, jadeite is commonly carved into auspicious symbols, each carrying a specific cultural meaning. Notable motifs include the gourd (hulu), representing prosperity and health; the ruyi, symbolizing the fulfillment of wishes; the lucky button, associated with unity and completeness; the donut shape, believed to convey blessings and fortune; and the melon, an emblem of abundance and fertility.

Additionally, animal carvings, representing the twelve zodiac signs, are popular, offering protection and good fortune aligned with the wearer’s birth year. These carved forms not only showcase jadeite’s aesthetic appeal but also enhance its cultural depth, adding layers of meaning to each piece. For further details on these handcrafted items, please refer to the descriptions provided with each product in our collection.

Key Value Factors

  1. Color: Jadeite comes in multiple colors, with “Imperial jade” (a nearly transparent, emerald-green shade) being the most valuable. Other shades like lavender, yellowish-green, and black are also sought after.
  2. Transparency: The best jadeite is semi-transparent, allowing light to penetrate slightly, giving it a glowing effect. This quality enhances the depth and allure of its color.
  3. Texture: Jadeite’s texture varies from fine to coarse, with a smooth texture adding to its appeal. Its compact crystal structure also makes jadeite highly durable. The same crystal structure that contributes to jadeite’s texture also enhances its exceptional toughness. The older the jadeite, the stronger and smoother the texture, which can also increase its value.

Types of Jadeite Treatments

  1. Type A: Natural jadeite without any chemical treatment, with only wax coating for polishing.
  2. Type B: Chemically treated to remove impurities, with resin infused to fill voids, which may deteriorate over time.
  3. Type C: Dyed jadeite with added coloring, typically alongside other treatments.
  4. Type B+C: A combination of Type B and Type C processes, meaning that the jadeite has been bleached, dyed and impregnated.
  5. Type D: Composed of a natural jadeite top and other materials such as glass or plastic as a backing to enhance its durability.

*Timeless Gems only deals with Type-A natural, untreated and undyed jadeite.
